UK Port Traffic Forecasting Model

UK Port Traffic Forecasting Model

The UK Department for Transport works with agencies and partners to plan and invest in the  transport infrastructure that keeps the UK on the move. In the ports sector, DfT’s role is central to the planning of the UK’s diverse ports industry, and it is developing its UK Port Traffic modelling capability to support this.

The UK needs ports to handle trade, and appropriate investment in these to sustain trade growth. DfT plays a crucial role in facilitating this via the National Policy Statement for Ports, and the UK Port Traffic Forecasts that support this. It therefore appointed Fisher Associates independent ports and shipping consultants to develop a UK Port Traffic Forecasting Model.

The methodology for this is in two Stages:

  • Review of current situation, scoping the model, and preparing the functional specification.
  • Construction of the model, testing it, and handover.

Stage 1 was complete as of January 2015, and Stage 2 is understood to be under implementation by DfT.
